The market for printable electronics always seems to have no bounds.
It penetrates not just the proverbial electronics market with traditional applications, but it is also making great strides in biomedical applications that rely on complex printed flexible sensors as well. The market for advanced technology in this area is likely to be significant according to researcher IDTechEx.
In their report Printed and Flexible Sensors 2017-2027: Technologies, Players, Forecasts, found here, they say the market for fully printed sensors will reach $7.6 billion by 2027.
They state:””Sensors that are printed on flexible substrates represent a growing market. Although the biggest segment — blood glucose test strips — is currently shrinking, the next generation of printed sensors will enable other applications, from human-machine interfaces to environmental sensing. IDTechEx predicts the market for fully printed sensors will reach $7.6 billion by 2027.””
IDTechEx says that such sensors benefit from the latest materials and technologies in the printed electronics industry. The sensors range from those with a simple structure and only a few electrodes to more complex ones with multiple layers. They may be manufactured on plastic substrates providing many benefits including flexibility, lower weight, and a thinner gage.
